Lord Jacob Rothschild, a financier and descendant of the Rothschild banking family, died at the age of 87. Rothchild's family acknowledged his death in a statement to the Press Association, but no cause was provided.

The statement went on to say: "Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many peoples' lives - a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather" .

According to the Mail Online, Lord Rothschild, who has four children, including billionaire Nat Rothschild, formed Windmill Hill Asset Management to oversee the family's philanthropic investments.

According to last year's Sunday Times Rich List, his family's fortune is believed to be over £82 million, with £66 million donated to Jewish charities, education, and art.

During his career, Lord Rothschild served as deputy chairman of BSkyB Television and chairman of trustees of The National Gallery.

Lord Rothschild, who attended Eton College and Christ Church Oxford, also served as chairman of the National Heritage Memorial Fund. In 1992, he also became president of the Institute of Jewish Affairs, which is now the Institute for Jewish Policy Research.

The family said in a statement today: 'Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people's lives, a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist, and a much-loved friend, father, and grandfather.

'He will be buried in line with Jewish custom in a modest family ceremony, and a memorial service will be held later to commemorate his life.'
